Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Turn-around time = 5 to 7 days. Specimen is serum. PSA is a secretion of prostate epithelium and is also produced by prostate cancer cells. It is a glycoprotein with protease activity. It can be used with digital rectal examination (DRE), and ultrasonography to detect prostate cancer. PSA may be elevated in prostate cancer or BPH (benign prostate hypertrophy), prostates, urinary retention, urethral instrumentation, needle biopsy, etc. Elevated PSA can only suggest the presence of prostate cancer. Prostate biopsy is is required for diagnosis of cancer. PSA testing can have significant value in monitoring patients with prostate cancer. Methodology is by Microparticle Enzyme Immunoassay (MEIA) technology. The normal range established in our laboratory is to 4.0 ng/mL. Selected References: Barak M, Mecz Y., Lurie, A., et al.
