Polyamines - Spermine and Spermidine
Polyamines are found in all animal, human and plant cells and contain three or more amine groups. They are necessary for cell growth and repair, protein synthesis, and stabilization of cell membranes. Spermine contains 4 amino nitrogens and occurs in large quantities in the blood, tissues, semen and brain. Low levels of spermine in the blood have been found in patients with presenile dementia, senile dementia, in hypoglycemia, normal aging and patients on estrogen therapy. Polyamines are necessary for a healthy nervous system and growth of young children. Human milk contains large amounts of spermine. Polyamines can be produced in the body from the amino acid ornithine or obtained from certain foods: cheese, beer, sauerkraut, yeast extracts, fermented foods, canned and frozen foods. Methodology for spermine and spermidine is a modification of the method for histamine.
