Antistreptolysin O (ASO) Antibodies+
This test is used to document exposure to streptococcal streptolysin O. A marked rise in titer or a persistently elevated titer indicates that a streptococcus infection or poststreptococcual sequelae are present. Streptolysin is a hemolysin produced by Group A streptococci. A patient produces an antibody against the streptolysin. A rise in the antibody begins a week after the infection and peaks about 2 to 3 weeks later. If there are no complications, the ASO titer will fall to preinfection levels within 6 months to a year. Ninty percent of strepotococcus pharyngitis patients have elevated ASO titers. ASO titers are elevated in 85% of patients with rheumatic fever but may NOT be elevated in cases of renal or skin infections. Methodology is by latex immunoturbidimetry. The normal range for ASO is 0.0 to 100 IU/mL. Selected References:
