Calcium (Ca)
  • Turn-around time for hair, urine, serum, RBCs = 5 to 7 days.
  • Specimen required is outlined in each specific section, urine, RBC, hair, serum.

Calcium forms structural salts for bones and teeth. It is essential for growth, blood-clotting, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, cell membrane permeability, and is a catalyst in many reactions. Decreased levels may cause weak bones and teeth, stunted growth, early tooth loss, muscle cramps and osteoporosis. It is found in milk and dairy products, soybean products, yogurt, turnip greens, broccoli, canned salmon, sardines and "hard water." The RDA is 1300 mg/day.

The methodology is by ICP, as described above, except where noted.

Expected values established in our laboratory for calcium are:

RBC= 0.1 to 0.55 mg/dL
Serum= 8.5 to 10.6 mg/dL
Hair= Male: 140 to 500 ug/g
Female: 200 to 1300 ug/g
Urine Pre-chelation= 55 to 275 mg/24 hr.
Urine Post-chelation= 135 to 435 mg/24 hr.
