Arsenic (As)
Arsenic is one of the best known heavy metal toxins. It was used in the 1700's and 1800’s as an anti-syphilitic and as a means to remove undesirable acquaintances. It is one of the most common toxins found in insecticides ("rat poison") and is also found in preserved pressure treated wood. Arsenic appears in many forms. The inorganic form is toxic, while the organic form is not. The organic form is found in shellfish, haddock and cod. The toxicity of Arsenic occurs in three different ways; two of these are related to energy transfer. Symptoms of As poisoning are "Mees' lines" (transverse white lines) in the fingernails, peripheral arteriosclerosis, hyperkerotosis, rice-water stools, proteinuria, garlic breath odor, and hyper-pigmentation. Methodology is by ICP. Reference value established in our laboratory for Arsenic is: Hair = 0.00 to 0.60 ug/g Selected References:
