Aluminum (Al)
Al is the third most abundant element in the earth’s crust after oxygen and silicon. In 1972, patients undergoing hemodialysis for renal failure experienced the symptoms of encephalopathy, This was characterized by abnormal speech, myoclonic jerks, convulsions and osteomalacic fractures. These symptoms were later related to Al in the dialysis water. Tissue sections of brains from Alzheimer’s patients were examined, and Al was found in the neurofibrillary tangles. Under normal conditions, the usual daily intake of Al is 5 to 10 mg. This is completely eliminated by the kidneys through glomerular filtration. Some common sources of Al are Al cooking utensils, baking powder (Al sulfate), certain antacids, Al cans, Alum in pickled foods, nasal sprays, ceramics, dental amalgams, automotive exhaust, pesticides, FD&C color additives, rat poisonings, etc. Methodology for hair Al is ICP; for urine Al it is atomic absorption. Reference values established in our laboratory for Al are:
